New Virus Identified in Florida Hibiscus 🌺

A recently identified virus affecting hibiscus plants has been found throughout Florida landscapes. Known as Hibiscus latent Fort Pierce virus (HLFPV), this virus can spread easily through common pruning and propagation practices. In many cases, infected plants may show little to no visible symptoms, making prevention especially important.

Hibiscus plants are typically grown from cuttings. While this is a standard and effective practice, it also means that if a plant is infected, the virus can be passed along to new plants and spread during pruning with contaminated tools. Once infected, a hibiscus plant remains infected for life.

The good news is that proper sanitation significantly reduces the risk of spread. Thorough cleaning of pruning and propagation tools has been shown to prevent transmission, helping protect healthy plants.
